Californians who still need to upgrade to a REAL ID but already possess a passport can comfortably wait to upgrade to a REAL ID when their driver’s license is due for renewal.

Need a REAL ID?

Here’s how for first-time driver’s license / ID card applicants and renewals: 

  1. Gather your documents with help from the checklist
    Use DMV’s interactive REAL ID document checklist to gather all of the documentation you will need to apply for your REAL ID.

  2. Complete the application online and upload your documents
    Save your confirmation code — you will need it for your office visit.

  3. Visit a DMV office.
    Bring the original documents you submitted online and your confirmation code.    Check wait times before you go. If a written test is required, tests are not available at DMV offices after 4:30 p.m.
